Latest Patterns

A Counted Quilts twist on an old classic Sunbonnet Sue. The pattern is for a single Sue, but it would be easy to put multiple together for a twin or full size bed.

New Bronc Rider pattern! I recently added one more cowboy to the rodeo. Originally I had a request for a twin size Bull Rider. Then some said they wanted a similar Barrel Rider so they could make one for a grandson and granddaughter who both ride. Then recently I had a similar request for a grandkid pair only he road Broncs not bulls. What can say I aim to please. I have also had a few people want them in a smaller size for a throw size quilt. So now all 3 patterns come in 2 sizes: Twin and Throw. Let me know if there is something else I should add to the growing Rodeo collection.

Speaking for requests, this Lystrosaurus was requested for a young dinosaur lover, who's favorite was this unlikely little guy. Do you have a kid who can name them all? What other dinosaurs would you like to see added to that collection?

Not being a coffee drinker myself I thought this an interesting suggestion, but I am always up for a challenge. Do you have someone who would love being wrapped in their coffee quilt with their hot cup of coffee?

This Traditional Nurse was made to be donated honoring all those who work so hard to keep us happy and healthy. A great partner to the Doctor Teddy bear who was also created as a thank you from a grateful quilter.

New Patterns

I have a few different cat patterns, was a Cheetah was suggested a while back at a show. I finally gave it a try. It took a few tries to get it right, but I am really please with the result. This one was made in rich batiks, but I would love to try it again in softer colors for a baby's jungle room.

I have made a few different baseball themed Quilts now. I started with a baseball bear as part of a sports bear series. Then I made the Grand Slam pattern when I was playing with sport silhouettes. But recently it was suggested that I drop the bears which cater to the younger crowd, and you might not feel like it works if your team has a different mascot, and go with just the items or something else that represented the sport and worked for an older audience.

So I now have the Basketball Hoop, these Baseball Items, and the other new pattern below Hockey Sticks.

Again this new pattern is not specific to any one team. You can make it in any colors supporting your local team or player. Not a hockey bear just Hockey Sticks. Still in the 3 sizes and borders add even more flexibility, so you can make this design for hockey fans of all ages.

Sizing Tip - Add Borders

I often tell people that you can border the image to make a twin. Here are two quick examples of Quilt tops I donated recently that were bordered to make them twin size. The image on the left is the Race Car pattern in the 48x56 size with checkers on the sides and a couple of rows of 6" blocks on the top and bottom. Then image the right is my first attempt at the cheetah quilt. This cat image is only a 36x42 bordered with 3 inch strips about 10 inches long of coordinating color scraps.

First Pattern of 2025! This little Axolotl has been requested a few times, and I finally figured out exactly what an Axolotl is and how I wanted to portray its cuteness. I hope you like it. Not only is it cute, but is a pattern you can really get creative with fabrics and colors.

This pattern also has new full cutting charts for the alternate sizes, hopefully making it even easier to put a Counted Quilt together.

My traditional green Tractor was a top seller for a long time, and though dethroned by the Monster Truck pattern, it is still very popular. At shows people always have a story about a friend or family member who took them for a ride on a tractor. Or who works with or collects tractors. Everyone has a Tractor story. But with those stories have come some requests for a different kind of tractor. So now we have the open cab front loading tractor.

In 2022 I made a Bull Rider as a custom request for a twin size bed. I like the way it turned out so much I decided to make it myself and add it to the catalog. In 2024 a Grandma asked me if I could make a similar girl barrel racing. She said she had made the bull rider for a grandson and her granddaughter did barrel racing she would really love to make a quilt for her too. Many of you know I started designing for my Mother to make baby quilts for her grandchildren, so how could I say no. I designed the Barrel Racing quilt shown on the left above. Again it turned out well I had to make it myself.
And since putting these two out into the world I have had a few requests to scale them down to a lap size not just a twin. That change will be added shortly. When you get either of these patterns, they will come with both the twin size and a smaller lap size.

2025 Sizing Chart Changes

Though the image style and process has stayed the same over the new almost 15 years of making Counted Quilts, I have changed the instructions slightly over time to make them clearer given the feedback I receive.
For example I know some people struggle with understanding how to use the alternate size cutting charts. In the past they were just the chart tops, with the new piece lengths, since that was the only information that changed. You are the meant to fold or rewrite the numbers over the original medium size quilt. I did this to save on paper, printing, and shipping costs. However many of you buy digitally and don't print at all, which make the fold option impossible, and the back and forth likely for mistakes.
I have changed the instructions slightly, and shuffled these around a bit so that you now have full piece cutting charts will now be on those last 2 alternate size pages. This change will be on new patterns. If you want it added to old patterns please give me that feedback as well.

New Patterns

This Fire Fighter was a customer order from a woman whose daughter was a fire fighter. (It is very easy to remove the ponytail hair from off the shoulder to make it more masculine.) I really enjoyed taking pictures of this Quilt at a local park celebrating fire fighters. If you are looking for a project to show your support look no further. My Fire Fighter and Fire Engine patterns are available in 3 sizes so you can make it for the person, or maybe for their baby.

This Carnotaurus was requested by a real dino lover's Grandma. She said he know the difference between a Tyrannosaurus and a Carnotaurus. Which as far as this design goes is horns and shorter arms. Meaning if you want a T-rex you can easily take those horns off.
Having a dinosaur fan at my house I add the cute dino fabric around the outside bring the crib size image up to a throw size lap quilt. Have some fun with fabric on this one.

This Golfer quilt pattern will make the perfect lap quilt or throw featured in the home of any golfing fan. It has been suggested golf join my sports for a while now, and I finally found the right inspiration to make it happen.

Rooster Quilt Pattern in 3 sizes: 36x42, with additional 24x28 and 48x56
After a very successful March Quilt show a Rooster was my most requested new pattern suggestion. So for your enjoyment, Rooster!

This Butterfly has been redesigned with a simpler style and piecing. It was a favorite of mine, since my oldest daughter was a spring time baby with bug and butterfly theme. I hope you will enjoy the new and improved Butterfly Quilt Pattern.
3 Sizes: 42x42 with additional 28x28 and 56x56 inches.

Highland Cow Quilt Pattern. This hairy friend is quickly becoming a fan favorite. I had no idea how popular it was going to be. Thank you to the customer who suggested it.

Updated my Train pattern by adding little train runners on the top and bottom to make it big enough for a twin size bed. New Train Twin

Basketball Hoop. A basketball quilt for the older crowd. Available in the 3 sizes so really it works for any basketball fan.

Crane Quilt pattern. This was a custom order that I thought the rest of you might enjoy. It too comes in 3 sizes.

Painting. This quilt was inspired by my daughter who is always drawing and painting in her free time. I bet you can think of an artist who might enjoy this pattern. It also comes in 3 sizes, so you can make it as wall décor for an art studio or as a large lap quilt.

New Patterns: Guitars, Chess, Mouse, and Strings

Guitars quilt pattern. This is a standard 3 size (36x42, 24x28, and 48x56) pattern prefect for musicians of all ages. Not hard to adapt for single guitar or alternate colors.

Chess quilt pattern. Also 3 sizes but square, 28x28, 42x42, and 56x56. Great lap quilt for the couch. Another pattern to have fun with color choice.

This Mouse quilt pattern was originally a custom order. It came out so cute I had to share it. It comes in the standard 3 sizes: 36x42, 24x28, and 48x56.

My daughter has played the viola since 5th grade Orchestra and I can't believe it has taken me so long to make a quilt honoring her and all the amazing people I know who play a string instrument. I did the background color in her school colors.

Hot Wheels - Monster Truck

Riley Blake Designs has a Hot Wheels Fabric line currently featuring my Monster Truck. It has also been made into a kit.

Latest Patterns

Prince Quilt Pattern. This little prince was made to match the princess pattern I already have. A wonderful Lady I meet at the November quilt show said she was awaiting the arrival of twin grandbabies and would love to make them a Prince and Princess set.

Moose Mascot. This was requested by a Seattle baseball fan, but use your team colors to show your team spirit. Also you can leave off the shirt lines and just make it a cute moose.

This Bucking Bull was a custom request that turned out so great I had to share it with all of you. It is a large twin size quilt pattern, and with some borders it could easily cover a full or queen size bed.

New Patterns - Halloween, Deer, Martial Arts, and Game Time

This new pattern started as just the spider by customer request, but my daughter decided we should turn it into a Halloween quilt. So I added the border of fun things that remind me of Halloween, making it a large throw, 60x66. The perfect blanket to snuggle up under while waiting for trick-or-treaters.

Deer - This too was a originally a customer request. She wanted the image to be twin sized. The finished size is 66x87, so plenty of overhang for a twin size bed. Making this one of the largest images I have designed. You can see here that it just covers a queen size bed, so if you want to add your own borders you could easily make this for a full or queen size bed.

Marital Arts - This design has two variations short hair as shown above and longer hair pulled back in a ponytail. It comes in my traditional 3 sizes: 36x42, plus 24x28 and 48x56. The simple design gives you lots of room to play with colors. Make sure to check out the pattern page to see some options I posted and get those creative juices flowing.

And don't forget to browse all my fall sports. I have added a new Football Mascot, the promised Swimming throw size variations, and I have Running and Soccer. And let me know if there is another sport you would like to see.

Game Time - Maybe you prefer to stay in when the weather gets cold. This design was inspired by my Husband and sons who are all gamers. Another large Lap quilt for gamers of all ages.

Tips and Hints

This is a very simple but helpful tip. If you are having trouble see the divisions on the labeled image simply us a blank piece of paper or a ruler to help you focus on the area you are working on.

Tips and Tricks

Along with these New Patterns comes an instructional video on how to make the Half Rectangle Triangle needed to make the Canadian Flag .
HRT Video

This leaf is symmetrical, so every half rectangle triangle you make will have a mirror image. Make them two at a time with one line left to right and the other right to left. Take the top piece and draw a diagonal line corner to corner 1/8th inch in from the corner. Mark the 1/8th inch on the bottom piece. When placing the top piece rotate it to make an X out of your pieces, lining up the 1/8th inch marks and line. Test to see if the top piece is going the appropriate way when flipped open. Sew down the line and trim ¼ inch away from the seam.

My First Blog Post

It’s official, I have a blog. And I am learning how to use it.

I have finally decided to take the plunge and add a blog to my site. Keep coming back to my site and check for updates right here on the blog.

I don't always feel like I have a lot to say, after all I design my quilts for beginners using traditional piecing. The cutting and sewing is all straight seams so how many tips can I give you? I do get questions occasionally so I will post those here with their answers. And I like to share what I am working on next so if you are looking for more information about Counted Quilts or my process as a designer this is where you find them.

Plus the rare event or sale. With kids still at home I currently only do 1-2 shows a year. I do my best keeping prices down so new sewers are able to take this beginner project guilt free any time, no sale necessary.
