The pattern first uses a chart with the given number of strips to be cut for each color. Second, it has a set of charts with piece lengths to be cut and labeled from those strips. The shaping is done with quick corner triangles, or the “snowball method” where a sew line is drawn corner to corner on a square and place on top of another square or rectangle. Once those squares are marked you follow a full page color labeled image of the baseball, assembling piece by piece, row by row.

I made the sample quilt for a neighbor in the large lap size. She was from Boston but living in Oregon, so I ordered the Red Sock patches for the hat and shirt. (They do not come with the pattern. I am not affiliated with the Red Sox) You can color his uniform and add players number or name to the shirt to give that personal touch.
I did simple outline quilting around the bear, and then echo quilting in the field. I did a zig zag stitch on top of the ball for a fun stitched look.
Those personal touches also make the small size a great feature as wall decor in a baseball themed room.
